The updated 2016 list of my gadgets, computers and software I use on a daily basis. Computer(s) Computer: MacBook Pro I continue to use my Mid 2014 MacBook Pro 13" with an attached 23" monitor. It's fast, has crazy long battery life, and works perfectly for doing coding or layout on my book. Smartphone: Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Best phone I've used hands down. Fast, great screen, waterproof and everything just works. Tablet: Onda 919V Dual Boot The Onda 919V 3G Air continues to be my go-to tablet. The screen had an issue and it took 6 months to get fixed. I don't know that I'd recommend it. Save your money and get a Samsung or Apple. Apple Magic Mouse Still using this mouse. No complaints. Ubuntu Servers Our home server has been replaced…

The updated 2015 list of my gadgets, computers and software I use on a daily basis. Computer(s) Computer: MacBook Pro I've been using a couple of different setups this year, but right now I'm using a nice new MacBook Pro 13" with an attached 23" monitor. It's fast, has crazy long battery life, and works perfectly for doing coding or layout on my book. Smartphone: Samsung Galaxy S5 I was using the LG G3, but the buggy software was causing some random reboot issues. I swapped it out for a Samsung Galaxy S5. While not as quick with the camera, it is a very solid smartphone. The fingerprint reader is a joke, but the unit is waterproof. Tablet: Onda 919V Dual Boot The Onda 919V 3G Air is a Chinese knock off…

Top 10 Android Apps to install on a new Android device

In the past I've done FOSS list for Windows, not that I've moved onto Android, here are my top 10 picks for app everyone should have installed on their phone/tablet. Apps Suite: Google apps Gmail App: The default email client on Android is good, but there is a different, gmail specific one. It has some nice features that the built in one is lacking. Gmail on the Play Store Google Calendar App: Similarly to the Gmail app above, there is a Google Calendar specific app. Google Calendar on Play Store Google Drive App: This app gives you access to add, edit and upload files to your Google Drive. Easily edit documents, spreadsheets and share. Google Drive on Play Store Google Voice: Great app that replaces your voicemail. It will transcribe…

How Samsung is killing Android

How Samsung is killing Android

Everyone is raving how Samsung has the opportunity to make Android better, or more competitive by forking it, or taking it over as Amazon did. The bigger issue is: look at how Samsung has been in supporting Android up-to-now to really answer that question for yourself. Samsung Moment – this is a very capable little Android phone, one which both Sprint and Samsung abandoned once a new handset came out to replace it. Samsung Tab (t-mobile) another example of a great Android tablet that both t-mobile and Samsung left out in the cold with an old version of the OS. These are only two examples of how Samsung has managed their Android ecosystem. Turns out that they are one of the driving forces in the OS fragmentation and the main…

Here is the updated list of the computers, gadgets and software I use on a regular basis. Computer(s) MacBook Pro What a difference a few years make! While I used to be a hardcore Windows user, now I can't stand it. I happily use my MacBook Pro and loath using Windows at all. I am running OSX 10.7 Lion and really love it. I don't miss anything about my Windows system at all. I actually feel sorry for people forced to use Microsoft software. iPhone 3GS With iOS5 and all the bells and whistles my 3GS is an amazing computer. The phone continues to be sad, the system as a whole rocks. Planning on getting the 4S when my upgrade is available. The iPhone is hands down the best PDA/iPod/Camera/Tool…

From time to time I get a wild hair and need to format my Mac and really start over with a clean slate. Most recently I’ve done it in response to a weird kernel panic I was getting. Here is the freeware that I installed right off the bat. Honestly you should too. 1. Google Chrome Browser This is the very first thing I install. It allows me to easily download everything else on the list. Make it the default browser while you’re at it. 2. ClamXav Best Anti-Virus hands down. Oh and it's free. 3. Keka Keka is a free file archiver for Mac OS X. Extracts: RAR, 7z, Lzma, Zip, Tar, Gzip, Bzip2, ISO, EXE, CAB, PAX, ACE - Compresses: 7z, Zip, Tar, Gzip, Bzip2 4. TextWrangler TextWrangler…

Oh and it's free. 3. 7-Zip 7-Zip integrates into Windows Explorer with a right click and can open any type of archive. It can also create 7zip and…

I get questions about my own setup from time to time. So I figured why not put together a list of the technology I use on a daily basis. So without further ado, the list: Computer(s) MacBook Pro While I really love Windows 7, more than OSX, I use my MacBook Pro as my primary system. I have it loaded with OSX 10.6.2 Snow Leopard as well as lots and lots of freeware.  The build quality is second to none, as is the keyboard. Very nice system. ASUS F3Sv My ASUS predates my Mac but is also a great system. I’ve upgraded to Windows 7 and it really rocks. I use it primarily when I have client who sends over Windows specific files, as well as to do some hardcore…
