After much trial and error we've selected our future framework for all projects: Laravel! It has great documentation, a good community, lots of plugs and a steady update path. Plus it's fun to code!
While tools like CodeIgniter, Kohana, and CakePHP served us well in the past, the PHP ecosystem has evolved dramatically, and Laravel is clearly leading the way forward. Here is why it stood out from the competition:
Modern Architecture vs. Legacy Constraints: CodeIgniter was great for lightweight setups, but its lingering support for outdated PHP versions held it back from embracing modern OOP practices. Laravel builds natively on modern PHP features, giving us access to expressive syntax, namespaces, and clean modular structures out of the box.
Superior Dependency & Package Management: Unlike older frameworks where managing third-party add-ons or framework extensions meant manual file copying, Laravel leverages Composer seamlessly. Its rich ecosystem of packages makes integrating features fast, predictable, and maintainable.
Built-in Developer Tooling: CakePHP pioneered rapid prototyping, but Laravel’s Artisan CLI takes command-line tooling to another level. From database migrations and seeders to scaffolded authentication, Artisan automates repetitive tasks that used to consume hours of setup time.
The Death of Kohana & Community Inertia: Kohana offered a clean, object-oriented approach, but its community momentum has stalled significantly in recent years. Laravel, on the other hand, boasts an explosive, active community, world-class documentation, and Laracasts, making onboarding and troubleshooting effortless.
Elegant Data Handling: Eloquent ORM makes interacting with database schemas feel intuitive and fluid compared to the rigid ORM patterns found in older frameworks.
Frameworks should speed up development without fighting you along the way. Laravel hits the sweet spot between developer ergonomics, robust architecture, and a clear, steady update path. Simply put, it makes coding fun again, and we are excited to build our next generation of applications on top of it!
